GAY MUSICAL COMEDY
‘THE GIRL IH THE TAXI ’ POPULAR Excellent patronage was again afforded the successful musical comedy, ‘ The Girl in the Taxi,’ at His Majesty’s' Theatre last night, the Dunedin Operatic Society cementing the favourable impression with last night’s performance of this gay, inconsequential piece of work. ‘The Girl in the Taxi’ possesses a wealth of humorous incident and is enlivened by a complex and diverting plot. The leading role is taken by Miss Nellie Wootton, whose part presents unusual opportunities, given full play by this delightful actress. Her acting is full of point. Miss Lettie de Clifford, cast as Suzanne, the sprightly wife of a scent ■ manfacturer, gives easily her best delineation to. date, and her performance is given added merit by the standard attained in her solo singing. Miss Gwenda Burt and Miss Daphne Murdoch are both fully competent in their parts. The leaders of the male section of the s cast—Mr George Currie, Mr James M'Farlane, Mr Stan Lawson, and Mr Arthur Lungley—also give excellent accounts of themselves. Miss Audrey Watson, Mr David Beil, Mr Reynolds Herbert, Mr Norman Lindsay, and Mr Alex M‘Dowell assist the main artists. The ballets and choruses are outstanding and constitute a distinct achievement/ Among the best chorus numbers are * Dearest Baronne,’ ‘Where is the Lady?’ ‘As Good As I Can Be,’ ‘ Waltzing,’ ‘ Suzanne, Suzanne, We Love You to a Man.’ ‘ The -Spirit of Paris,’ ‘At the Ball,’ and ‘ Shine ’ are delightful ballet numbers, and some fine work is done by the soloist, Miss Dorothy Judd. The production is well mounted and directed, and great credit is due to Mr Angus Gorrie, stage manager, and Mr Stan Lawson, producer. ‘The Girl in the Taxi’ will be repeated nightly this week.
