DUNEDIN PRESBYTERY

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Presbytery was held yesterday afternoon, the Moderator (Key. D. C. Herron) presiding. INCREASE OF BURSARIES. . In reference to the decision of the annual Synod of the General, Assembly, which dccfded to. make a special effort to increase bursaries, the Theological Hall Committee was of the opinion that the tiihe was ripe for a. general appeal to the church, stated a letter read to Presbytery. Through its funds the committee might make itself retponsible for an increase of £2O, or a less amount in small parishes, with a View to assisting one student. The committee suggested that each district might find it possible to help a student. •__Xhe matter . was referred to the Finance and Student Committees. EXTENSION COMMITTEE. ' The Church Extension Committee reported with . regard to _ the right of call, and Presbytery decided to agree to the overtures regarding the fixing of £250 instead of £2BO as the minimum to retain that right. LACK OF MISSION FUNDS. “ The New Deal is having an effect on the work of the church m China,’’ remarked the Moderator in presenting the report of the Advisory Committee. The problem of sufficient funds to meet the work in the mission fields was bad enough last year, but it was now accentuated through the change in the value of silver. The money was now only worth about half of what it was a year ago.' At present the church was not carrying out any work in the mission fields. In order to balance the budget. Presbytery would have to raise £3,900 this year for carrying out the operations in mission countries.—The report was adopted. GENERAL. The clerk reported that Assembly recommendfed that the annual Lord’s Day observance be commemorated on Julv 7. The recommendation was adopted. . . A motion of appreciation of the work of the interim session at South Dunedin during the last four years was carried. The clerk (the Rev. J. D. Smith) reported that one of their members (Mr 'W’. Grundy) was seriously ill and was about to undergo a severe operation. —lt was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mr Grundy. Motions of sympathy with the relatives of Mrs A. C. Begg. whoso death " occurred on Friday, and the relatives of ■the late Mr James Brown were carried in the customary manner. It was decided to extend the Presbytery’s congratulations to Dr J. R. Elder on the honour of C.M.G. bestowed on him by the King. A tnotion of appreciation of the work of the interim session at South Dunedin during the past four years was carried. The clerk reported that there was a commission in favour of Mr Archibald Kirkwood for the newly-appointed session at South Dunedin.—Sustained.
