The need for a society to help the ' •rippled children of New Zealand and of funds for the society to carry on its work were emphasised by speakers today at » public meeting called by the mayor to stimulate interest in Canterbury in the branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children’s Society which was formed recently by 15 members of the Christchurch Rotary Club. There was a large attendance at the meeting to-day, and at the- cpnclusion those . present passed a: resolution undertaking to become members of the society and pledging themselves to do evei'ything possible to increase the membership.' ‘ Mr. J. Mawson Stewart, president of the Christchurch Rotary Club, said it was'not intended , to make the movement a Rotary one. Rotary had made the first move, but when the society was established Rotary would probably ■ drop out, although doubtless some Rotariaris would remain in the society -» as members. . 1: said the society was' not being formed merely to dispense the interest - 6r capital of Lord Nuffield’s gift. A much larger income would he needed, and this would have to come from members; and-from public subscriptions.
