MEAT DISCUSSIONS

COMMENT BY ‘THE TIMES’ HOPES FOR COMPROMISE Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, May 17. With participation by Messrs ForbeS and Coates, ‘ The Times ’ anticipates that the meat negotiations will be resumed on a broader, basis and hopes that a compromise will be reached acceptable to all. “ Much of friction in this and other interests might have been avoided if the Ottawa Conference had created permanent machinery to continue economic co-operation. It should be the business of the next conference to create an organisation which will keep Empire Governments informed of economic changes as they .occur and facilitate the adjustment of policies. In the meantime the presence of so many responsible Empire Ministers provides an opportunity to set the preparatory work in connection with the conference afoot. MONDAY'S MEETING FAILURE WILL CAUSE INTERIMPERIAL CRISIS. LONDON, May 17. (Received May 18, at 12.5 p.m.) The ‘ Sun-Herald ’ service says: “If Monday’s meat meeting with Mr MacDonald, Mr Thomas, Mr Runciman, and Mr Elliot fails tl]e discussions will pj-obably be terminated forthwith. It is, admitted everywhere that collapse will cause an interimperial crisis, threatening the entire Ottawa agreements. Mr Forbes and Mr Coates and the New Zealand experts discussed meat for several hours. It is understood that they are unrelentingly opposed to Australia securing an in"crease over the extended quotas, preferring to adhere to the existing agreements, even including the Argentine.” ■ • ■ ■
