UNFORTUNATE DEVELOPMENT CNtV out on strike Preos Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, May 17. A message from Havre states that the maiden voyage of the Normandie, which is expected to capture the Atlantic blue riband for France, may be delayed owing to a strike of the crew. The owners declare that unless the crew returns to work it will be a national disaster. The Government is most Anxious lest' the trouble should spread to other ports and become a general shipping strike. One thousand mobile guards have been drafted to Havre in the event of riots. The dispute concerns the permanence of service. Only one-third of the company’s crews are engaged permanently and the unions desire four-fifths. MAYOR’S WARNING TO STRIKERS. HAVRE, May 17. (Received May 18, at 10.5 a.m.) The Mayor of Havre warned the strikers that even if their claims were just the nation would judge the strike severely when the President of the Republic was on the point of inaugurating national • rejoicings, marking the culmination of efforts'to enhance the prestige of the French mercantile marine.
