CROSSING SMASH. Struck by the north-bound train, while caught in the cattle stops at the retone level crossing shortly after 9.30 fast night, a five-seater motor car . driven by Mr D. H. Hopkirk, 135 \ Marine parade, Seatoun, was carried about 100 yards up the line by th* engine and smashed to matchwood. The car was unoccupied at the time,' Mr Hopkirk having abandoned it on hearing the whistle of the approaching train. The engine had been giving trouble, and he had been, trying to adjust the mixture. Mr Hopkirk stated that, as be approached the level crossing, he was busy with the engine, and before ho realised what had Happened he found the car on the cattle stops. The wheels jammed, and all his efforts to move, the car failed. He fan down the line to try to stop the train, but was unable to do so. FATAL INJURY. _Fatal injuries were received by Mrs Mary Agnus Warner, who lived at 74 Hutt road, when she was knocked down by a motor car at Lower Hutt shortly before 6 o’clock last evening. Mrs Warner was the wife of Mr P. Warner, who recently returned from a trip to Russia. Mrs was crossing the road on her way to the Lower Hutt railway station, r.ear the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board offices, when she was struck by a motor car driven by Mr W. Fortune. Thera was a light drizzle falling at the time. A doctor was summoned, but she died before bis arrival. ' i ' FATAL SHOOTING MISHAP. Norman J. Johansen, aged 22, £ married man, died at Kakahi after receiving injuries from a gunshot wound.In the afternoon the deceased went out shooting rabbits alone. Apparently, he. tripped and the gun went off, the charge entering his right sida below the armpit. A doctor was summoned, but Johansen was dead when he arrived.
