HIGHWAY FUND RAIDS

WILL £500,000 BE TAKEN AGAIN ? NO INFORMATION AVAILABLE YET [SPECIAL TO THE ‘ StAK.’I WELLINGTON, Slay 18. , Though motorists’ organisations have shown great, activity in putting pressure on the Government to reduce its raid on the highway funds this year, they have so far ‘not succeeded in getting any satisfactory assurances that £500,000 will not again be diverted from roads, in addition to 2d of the petrol tax. Every possible source of information, including the motoring representatives, was tapped by your correspondent in the hope of obtaining some advance information on the subject. Mr Hamilton (acting Minister of Finance) was one of those who stated that highway finance could< not be made the subject of any announcement at the present date. The assumption is that motorists will have to await the Budget statement. They were* assured by Mr Coates, prior to his departure for London, that he would consider the whole question in relation to other aspects of finance while on his way to England. There was a radio conversation between Mr Coates and the acting Minister of Finance yesterday, but this subject does not appear to have been discussed.
