GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER
TWO YEARS' IMPRISONMENT [Psa United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 17. Joseph Frederick David Clarkson,; who was found guilty of manslaughter, was sentenced to two years' hard labour by Mr Justice Johnston in the Supreme Court to-day. Clarkson was convicted of unlawfully killing Adelina Mary Bradley,' thereby committing manslaughter. Commenting on the seriousness of the crime, the judge said he felt, by imposing a sentence of two years, he would be giving effect to the jury’s strong recommendation for mercy. [Clarkson pleaded not guilty to % charge of killing Bradley on March 17, 1935. He had been intimate with Bradley-- On the night of March 17 ha helped hep to use a syringe, after which she died of heart failure. The case for the Crown was that an instrument had been used for an illegal purpose. For, the defence it was suggested that Clarkson acted innocently with the intention merely of relieving the girl from pain. The jury’s verdict of guilty earned a’ recommendation to mercy.]
