Holms as the representative of the Government on the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board in succession to Mr David Jones has been gazetted. Mr R. V. S. M'Pherson, Melbourne manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company* Ltd., has been appointed chairman of the Melbourne Woolhrokers’ Association. Subject to confirmation by the executive of the New Zealand Democrat Party, Mr J. Cartwright, a member of a well-known South Canterbury farm y,. has consented to contest the Temuka’ seat at the General Election in the interests of the Democrat Party. Mr Cartwright was for some years on the staff of the Pleasant Point District High School, and was a prominent athlete. . Dunedin competitors continue to pa successful at the annual festival of the Christchurch Competitions Society, in the dominion recitation for women, own selection, a class which attracted lb entries. Miss Josephine Keown was first, Miss Nanna Newey was second,; and Miss Lexie Mathieson was third, the repectivs points gained being 81-, 81 and 80. The performance of Miss Ngata Buswell in the same section was very highly commended. Dr S. M. Lambert. South Seas, representative of the Rockefeller Inst!tute, arrived at Auckland by the Monterey from the United States, and will return to Fiji by the Monterey on its next trip north. Dr Lambert, whoso work in the islands is well known, said that the effective preventive measures of improved sanitation and the increased interest by the natives in their own welfare were reducing tropical diseases among the natives.—-Press Association.?
