(Received May 17, at 1 a.m.) A Bagdad message states: The 22-year-old King Ghazi has proclaimed martial law in the area where some tribes revolted. He ordered Iraqi aeroplanes to bomb the rebel strongholds. Several chiefs have already surrendered and- their followers have been dispersed. i The Arabs apologised for shooting down the aeroplane stating that they had no idea that it belonged to Britain, with which they had no quarrel. [A British aeroplane which was flying over an area in the Middle Euphrates provinces, where some tribes recently revoltea, was fired on and crashed in flames. The occupants of the crashed machine were Pilot-offi-cer Newman and Aircraftsman Hawkins. The Air Ministry announced that the machine was engaged in reconnaissance duties. The Arabs afterwards brought the bodies to Bagdad.]
