RIFLE SHOOTING
The association opened the 1935 season on Wednesday evening with a handicap sweepstake match fired on the Drill Hall range. Sixty-five competitors entered for the 21 prizes, a gratifying feature of the shoot being that four possibles were registered, as against one in the opening shoot last season. The all in cards were returned by G. H. Smith (Citizens), E. Pearce (Railway), R. Mason (Citizens), and R. Souter (Barnett’s). Scores of 79 off the rifle were put on by J. Allan (R.S.'A.), G. McDonald (Speight’s), W. Graham (Barnett’s), and G. M'Nisb (Barnett’s). Handicaps brought 21 others into the 79 score, and only those with this aggregate got into the shoots off. providing 29 competitors for the 21 prizes. The handicap limit was fixed at 79, the shoot off was one compulsory sighter and four counting shots with half handicap, further ties being decided shot for shot. The prize winners in order of merit were:—R. Souter, R, Mason, G. H. Smith, E. A. Pearce. A, M‘Donald, A. Regg, T. Grainger, G, M'Donald, Mips S. Cassells, F. Keane, J. Harrison, F. Godfrey, R. A. Rennie, J. Wilson, R. H. Stewart, Miss Matthews, C. A. M'Nish, Mrs Mason, J. Allan, W. Graham, and Miss Birtenshaw. The 79’s counted out were:—A. J. Peterson, Miss Matheson, J. Porteous, C. James, N. Jones, W. Goudie, Miss Teasdale. and A. Larsen. The prizes were well distributed among tho clubs. Members of the Railway secured five, Barnett’s five, Citizens four, L.N.B. and R.S.A. two each, and C.F.H., Dunedin, and Speight’s one each.
