LEGION OF FRONTIERSMEN
”R" SQUADRON ; The annual meeting • of: the above squadron took place on Wednesday '' at the ■ squadron rooms, \ Vogel street . Lieutenant-colonel . '6. B. Mitchell,’ D. 5.0., V.D., was in the chair, a record attendance ,of. members being present. The Balclfitha Troop was represented by Frontiersman J. H.Stevenson. The balance-sheet showed a satisfactory, state of affairs and received favourable comment on being adopted. - The various committees reported in detail, and each on© showed 'a health j condition in its individual sphere. Nominations wero received for tho position of O.C. Frontiersman A. Applegartb proposed Lieutenant-colonel Mifchell for the coming year,, and ho was unanimously elected. Lieutenantcolonel "Mitchell then took the chair amidst applause, and, in reply urged members to strain every: endeavour, to attend the fortnightly parades at tho drill hall, so that each and every man should be efficient when on ceremonial or other parades.- : ; During the evening the Executive, Investigation, and Rifle Club Committees were appointed. Delegates were , appointed for the annual New, Zealand Conference which, will bp Held in Dunedin. A number of men assisted on Poppy Day. , , Last Saturday twenty-seven left by bus to assist the police, at Balclutha f during the opening or the Clutha. bridge. After the opening the Legion was requested by the president of the Aero Club to take control of the publio at bbe aerodrome while flying was in. progress, and to assist during the parachute descent of Mr Skinner. In tho evening the visiting Frontiersmen were the guests at a social garnering of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Major Waite, M.L.C., presided, and introduced Lieutenant-colonel Mitchell, who in turn introduced Licuter int David Graham,- N.H.Q. Staff, and Lieutenant Klee gave a description of the aim* and objects of the Legion and its activities prior' and after the Great On Sunday a combined churebt parade of the R.S.A. and the Legion* took place at the Presbyterian Church., After .the service, headed by the Dunedin Pipe Band, under command of Lieutenant Napier, the parade marched . to the Cenotaph, where a wreath was ! laid in memory of those who fell in • the Great War. . - Final arrangements were completedfor' the annual conference,, which will take place'here from May 17 to 19, when delegates from all over New; Zealand are expected to be present. On May 17 a lantern address will bn given by Lieutenant David Graham, N.Z.H.Q. Staff, showing the activities of the Legion throughout the Empire* Two hundred and fifty to 300 slides am to be shown on the screen.. On Saturday the conference will be held a* the R.S.A.'Rooms, and in the evening a smoke social will be held. On the Sunday a church parade will take place at St. Paul’s Cathedral at 10 a.m., when Padre F. V. Fisher will conduct tbe service, after which a wreath will be laid on the Cenotaph.
