Ministers of the Crown, officers of State departments, and many friends gave the Minister of Finance, Eight Hon. J. G. Coates, and' pai-ty a friendly farewell when they left Wellington by tho limited express last night on tho first stage of-the journey to London. Mr Coatee is accompanied by Mrs Coates, Mr P. Ver« schaffelt, ’ and • his personal secretary. Miss H. D, Montague. He said ho ' would make a farewell statement before leaving Auckland. > < _ Sir Charles Statham came to Dunedin as soon as the Parliamentary session ended to settle some, business affairs, and started oh his return to Wellington this morning to finish sundry duties appertaining to tho Speakership. , . Mr A, E. Efford, chief inspector of fisheries, was in Southland in the early part’of this week, and after attending to certain matters in Dunedin,' left this morning for Timaru and Temuka. J Captain Prictor travelled by irami to-day to Timaru. Mr A. B. Callict, an executive member of the directorate for , the South, Island of New Zealand Honey Limited, left by the 11.35 train to-day, bound for Auckland. , Mr Gerald Benson, booked for Wellington, left by the second express to-day. ' - Mr W. B. M'Kenzie, general manager of, the United Company, was a passenger for Wellington bv the 11.35 train to-day. Mr Stanley Pether left for Palmerston North this morning. The Rev. Dr C. W. Gordon (“ Ralph Connor ”) was'taken. for a motor dnva to-day. He is to preach at First Church and Knox Church to-momnv, and the subject of his public address on Monday will be ‘The New World. Mr Alexander Robertson has decided to contest the Harbour Board election. He was formerly superintending engineer to the board and was. sent Home to supervise the construction of the dredge Otakou. ' Mr and Mrs G. Pargcr (Te Kauwhata), (Messrs J.'A. Dodson and :E. ; Walsh (Christchurch), and Mr A. Latty (Gore), are guests at tho City Hotel. . . , , A Christchurch Association telegrant records the death of Mr Louis aged .fifty-five,. manager, of the Loan and Mercantile at Rakaia. Yesterday a deputation .urged A. W. Martin, well known in commercial circles in Dunedin before his retirement, to allow himself to be nominated for a seat on the Citv Council, ■ Hospital Board, and Harbour Board. In reply Mr Martin said he had always taken a close interest in the affairs of the city, and was willing to accede to the request of the deputation.
