THE EASTER TOURNAMENT CANTERBURY COLLEGE TRIALS Interesting comment on the performances at the Canterbury College athletic trials is contained in a letter to the ‘ Star’s ’ athletic writer from Mr J. K. Moloney, president of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, who states that tho trials disclosed the usual high standard of achievement, whicli entitles this club to be regarded as one of the strongest all-round combinations in the dominion. ' Carmichael and Oldfield could hardly be separated in the 220 yards _ in 23 2-ssec—good time on the Christ’s College ground, and the latter ran impressively to win the quarter in 51 2-ssec—not good enough to beat Watt, of Otago, but still a performance full of merit. All eyes were on V. P. Boot. He ran his half in 2min dead—great going for the track—ho is not yet fit, and should run a great half in Dunedin at Easter. Mr Moloney has spoken to several good judges about this boy, and they are all very impressed—one went so far as to say that he is the best tiope, save Lovelock, for Olympic honours of anyone produced by the game in New Zealand. Mr Moloney says he thinks that Boot is the best-built distance man that he has seen, and ho considers his mentors should first get him down to 1.65 for the half and then try linn over the mile journey. He won the mile last Saturday in 4.35. The hurdles are classy, Milner went 15 3-sscc for 120 yards hurdles, A. D. Bonham did 26sec for the 220 yards low hurdles, and Arnold Anderson ran in his best form this season to return 57 ].-ssec for the quarter journey over the sticks. No other club has a set of three stride artists to compare with these—they are at present .right on top. In the javelin E. R. Hounsell threw 172 ft 7in, which should win him the title at Dunedin. Other prominent performers were Tiffen and Blake (jumpers) and Dawson (shot). All things considered, tho Canterbury College team/null be hard to beat. It has fielded teams repeatedly in the intex - -club competition and had an admirable team-spirit and morale -which enables them to get the very best results, Easter being later than usual may have an effect on the times'nut up, and if Easter Monday breaks well a splendid meeting should result. /
