The main highway between Gisborne and Napier via Morere is badly, dam-', aged as the result of heavy rains overnight. The culvert near Nuhaka was washed away and small slips on JobTin’s Hill are also: holding up , trafficThe Public Works Department reports that the v road is unlikely to be opened before. three or four. days. The other main route, Gisborne-Wairoa via Tiniroto, has been, out of commission foi; some weeks; owing to; an extensive repair programme. The rainfall at Gisborne for th* twenty-four hours to 9 a.m. was tha heaviest recorded for years, 2.37 inchesThe Public Works Department is despatching ■ all available men from Bartlett’s and Morere to - clear the slips, but it is estimated that it will be three or four days before the work is completed. The river in one pgrt bhanged its course, eating away some acres of flai land. . Other streams are in high flood, and the main road at Whakaki is under water. f
