BASKETS OF LACHENALIAS
It is not too late to think about furnishing a lew of these. A wellgrown basket is a thing of beauty in spring. They can be hung outdoors beneath trees or any other spot where a glimpse of something bright is needed. The beautiful spikes of bloom last a long time, and the glossy, matted leaves are alivays attractive. The baskets should be thickly lined with live moss, which will keep the soil from trickling through, and the soil needs to be a good strong loam enriched with live moss, which will keep the soil. Having lined the basket, put in a good layer of soil some 2in or so, then a layer of bulbs with their growing ends pointing towards the moss. Repeat the process until the top of the basket is nearly reached, leaving Miflicient space for a few bulbs’ to finish off the top with. By keeping the basket moist early growth may be induced, and once the bulbs have started into active growth they can do with plenty of moisture and a weekly dosing of liquid manure. The watering is easily done by immersing the wnole basket in a pail of water. The lacuenalias are also very useful for growing in pots and bowls. —Manawatu ‘ Daily Times.’
