DOUBLE VICTORY

OIRIS' HIGH SCHOOL SUCCESSFUL SWIMMING AND LIFE-SAVING For the first time since either was instituted, one school has been successful in winning both the life-saving and relay Otago secondary schools’ girls’ championships, this performance being accomplished by the Otago Girls’ High School in the annual competition at the Municipal Baths yesterday afternoon. The competitions have grown in importance, and the 133Jyds relay four-a-side championship was contested by no fewer than seven teams on this, occasion, the race producing one of the most thrilling struggles since its inception. The Girls’ High and Technical High teams fought'out the issue all the way, Girls’ High managing to get home with barely a .yard to spare in the good time of Imin 28 4-ssec, Technical (winners of the race for the last four years) being second, with Waitaki Girls’ High School in third place. On the thirteen occasions that this event has been contested Girls’ High School has won the shield nine times and Technical four times. Both events were controlled by officials of the Otago Head Centre of the Royal Life Saving Society, Mr H. H. Henderson (president) being the referee, Messrs D. C. Bannatyno and P. A. Mathieson judges; Messrs A. Greig and H. H. Henderson timekeepers; Mr P. A. Mathieson starter; and Mr E. C. Isaacs announcer. At the conclusion of the competitions the shields were presented to the successful teams by Mr Henderson. RELAY CHAMPIONSHIP. THE TEAMS. Dunedin Technical High School.—C. Knowles, I. Purdie, A. Otago Girls’ High School ... ... 1 Dunedin Technical High School ... 2 Waitaki Girls’ High School 3 Very early the race resolved itself into a great struggle between Girls’ High and Technical, the issue being in doubt almost to the finish. Technical established a slight lead over the first lap, but High School drew level in the second lap, at the ond_ of which High led by a foot. Entering on the last lap, Girls’ High School held a lead of 4ft, and an exciting tussle ensued between C. Knowles (Technical) and J. Thomson (High School)., Miss Knowles reduced the leeway, but Miss Thomson staged a very determined finish to give High victory by barely a yard. -Waitaki was several yards back third. . Time, Imin 28 4-ssec. LIFE SAVING CONTEST. HALF-POINT MARGIN. The life saving championship attracted teams from six schools, the land drill being taken during the week, ■with the exception of that of Waitaki Girls’ High School, which was performed yesterday. The contest comprised the work laid down in the examination for the society’s bronze medallion, with the exception, of the swimming of the distances on breast stroke and on the back. The water work was of a uniformly high standard, the various methods of rescue and release being performed with a smartness and precision that did credit to those who were responsible for the instruction of the girls. As in the relay. Girls’ High School and Technical had another very wellcontested struggle for supremacy, Girls’ High retaining possession of the Life Saving Shield by the narrow margin of half a point, its success being duo to a very slight margin of superiority in the time taken - in performing the various methods of rescue; otherwise there was almost nothing to choose between two very fine teams, their method in the waer being outstanding.

Columba College gave a good display for third place,' as did Waitaki Girls’ High School for fourth, the towing of some of the girls being really good, though they were at a disadvantage in not having the same speed in the swimup as the first two^teams.
