AUSTRALIAN TARIFFS
NEW SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED KOTOR INDUSTRY AFFECTED Pres* Association —By Telegraph—Copyright CANBERRA, March 29. (Received March 29, at 11.30 a.m.) The tariff shedule, embodying eightysix reductions under the British preferential rate and thirty-three' under the general rate, has been tabled in the House of Representatives. It becomes effective to-day. The most striking variation affects motor body panels. The tariff on completed bodies is unaltered, but a body imported in panel sections for assembly locally can now be landed for £3 los, compared with £32 10s as formerly. Other items on which tariff is reduced include apparel, socks and stockings, agricultural machinery, machine tools, and textiles. The Minister of Customs (Mr White) said that the Government’s tariff policy would definitely reduce production and living costs without detrimentally affecting employment. None of the new duties was below the level which exhaustive inquiry by the Tariff Board had shown to be adequate to protect industries and make for the greatest efficiency.
