SHORTWAVE WANDERINGS Station YV6RV, Venezuela, is now operating on 6,530 k.c. (46 m.), with a power of 500 watts. OAX4B, Luna, Peru, is another South American to add to the list of 48 m. stations. OAX4B is on 48.2 m. HCIJW has been heard on approximately 45 m. during the late afternoon. Reports may he addressed to P.O. Box 13/, Guayaquil. Ecuador. Yet another new one is TIGPH, San Jose, Costa Rica, on 51.5 m. ~ . , Listeners should try for the shortwave station at Johannesburg transmitting on 49.2 m., with a . power oi 5,000 watts. The, present schedule is 4.45-5.30 p.ra., 9-12 p.m., 1-9 am. The address for reports is: ZIJ, African Broadcasting Co., Box 4,00 J, Johannesburg, South Africa. Several new wavelengths are to be used by the 8.8. C. in order to improve the Empire service, and this week tests have been conducted during the afternoons on 49.1 m., using the call GSL. The officials in London are requesting listeners to report their reception of the Empire stations, stating ’which wavelength they receive on best, and giving full data regarding reception conditions at various hours. Exceptional conditions have lately been enjoyed, stations being heard at excellent strength by day as well as by night. The two 31 m. Americans arc back to their usual volume, and the Germans on this band are also heard during the afternoons conducting tests to South America. _ On Monday six stations were operating on 31 m. at 3.30 p.ra. —W2XAF, WIXAZ. VK3LR, GSC, DJN, and a stranger above GSC. Amateurs on the 20 meter band can be logged from 3 p.m. until midnight, some of the Americans (or W’s) reaching astonishing volume. A stranger has been beard op approximately 30.5 m. from about 8 a.m.. and audible at good strength until after 9.30 a.m. At its best, volume is R 8 with a slow, deep surge. Although no definite information is to hand, the station is believed to be Radio Roma, Italy, which was heard testing in January, The new German station DJQ (19.63 m.) transmits a session between 5.30 and 7 p.m. Has anyone heard it? WBXK (25.27 m.) is coming through well during the mornings about 9.30 a.m.. and is much dearer than when heard in the afternoons. WEEKLY BAROMETER The past week lias been a noisy, one for D.\. American, VK, and European stations have been quite good. Last Sunday morning, particularly, was splendid for Europeans. The TJ.S.A. frequency tests have been fair, but. of course, nowhere near as good as in the height of the season last November and December. Americans are coming in earlier every night, this being most noticeable, for some are showing up before 6 p.m. Pacific Coast Americans have never been heard better than lately. Some, such as KYA (1,230), KOL (1,270), KOMO (920), KOTN (940), arc not always easily logged. KGIW (1,420) broadcasts a DX programme every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, mid Sunday evening from 7-8. WMBI (1,030) has been heard lately on Saturday and Wednesday evenings when they close at 7. KIUJ is frequently testing on 1,310 k.c. up till 8 p.m. ■ SPECIAL PROGRAMMES TO-NIGHT. In ah endeavour to efleet a better service in nearby areas, the wavelength of the Kuala Lumpur station has been changed temporarily Lorn 48.92 metres to 75 metres. A new studio has been completed on Petalinj:, Hill fitted with the most modern equipment. and an adjoining room has been furnished as a committee and lecture room, which also serves as a waiting room for, artists.,
