SOUTH OTAGO NOTES
FREEZING WORKS PICNIC Beautiful weather prevailed on Saturday for the annual picnic of the employees of the South Otago freezing Works, held at Whitelea, about tune miles'up the river. The trip was made per medium of the p.s. Chitlin, and was reallv delightful. The picnic ground was "reached in about two hours, the trip up river being enlivened by the plaving of the Balclutha Pipe band The ground was an admirable one, and after luncheon had been partaken of an excellent sports programme was gone through. During the afternoon several parties arrived by motor car, while district residents also joined the picnicers so that the 300 odd who made the trip hv boat were augmented by about another hundred. There was good competition in all events, some haying to be run in heats. The organisation was good, and reflected great credit on.the committee, of which Mr 6. M Ivay, sen., and Mr 0. Garside held the icspective positions of president and secretarv. The return trip was commenced at 6 p.m., Balclutha being reached shortly after / o clock without incident. The Balclutha Brass Band plaved a number of selections on the homeward trip. On both riops fniit was distributed freely amongst all o board, and the picnic was a pronounced success in every way. At Pounawea there was a large attendance at the picnic held under tho auspices of the combined Farmers Unions and Women’s Divisions of the district. The programme was a varied one, including swimming, boat and flat races, also pillow-fighting in the water.
