CARE OF THE CAR
HATTERS THAT COUHT Look after your cur as it deserves to bo looked after, aiid your car will look after you. Owners, who boast that all they ever do is to put in water* oil, and petrol are far too numerous, and when they find their cars becoming unreliable and unkempt in appealance, with consequent depreciation in value long before their expected mileage has been reached, they abuse the particular model they own. „ , There are a number ol excellent car polishes marketed at low cost, and one tin will last many weeks. {f M l ® coachwork is given regular attention it is much easier to keep clean, but if it is neglected for Jong periods no amount of .polish and elbow grease will restore the original lustre. Moreover, the polish will preserve the paintwork and prevent rain and dirt from spoiling the paint. It will also well repay the owner to look after the chromium plating. Ordinary metal however, should not be used for cleaning; they will remove the plate. Next there is the need for touching up any little spots where the. paint has chipped off. With modern metal bodies it is only too easy to chip the paintwork merely by slamming the door. Delay in attending to these patches will allow the wet to eat into the metal, and ugly rusty patches will follow and make subsequent touching-up a more difficult matter .to carry out satisfactorily. This work can be done with a brush, but it will necessarily be. more clumsy than if a spray filled with cellulose is used to give an even finish. Miniature spray plants for the home garage are now inarketed and are worth-while investments.
Body squeaks and rattles can soon be traced. Odd nuts here and there may have worked loose and merely ask for a few turns with a spanner; screws also may work loose, and the play thus allowed can soon be cured with a screwdriver. The chassis and springs must be given regular attention as regards oiling and greasing. It is possible to take one’s car into almost any garage and have it oiled and greased at low cost and in the minimum time. Considering modern garage facilities and the .many special preparations and equipment for servicing the car of today, there should be no excuse for motorists neglecting their cars. ,They will find it cheaper in the long run to give machinery, chassis, and coachwork, regular attention.
