CHARCOAL AS MOTOR FUEL

A new Swedish invention claimed to revolutionise the running costs of heavy motor traffic has just been launched on the market. Known as the GrahamStedt gas generator, it is said to make possible the use of charcoal briquettes instead of petrol for motor lorries, with a saving in fuel costs of more than 60 per cent. The Graham-Stedt Company, of Stockholm, after long and careful experiments, now claim that their new generator has been perfected to a stage of the highest efficiency, eliminating the disadvantages encountered in earlier attempts to construct similar generators. The cleaning and cooling arrangements are simple and effective, the motor can be started directly on the coal gas, and has proved to be entirely reliable in practical use. The caloric value of the gas and the power obtained from the engine are claimed to approach those of petrol. The Swedish State authorities have shown great interest in the invention, and have supported it in various ways.
