£2OO DAMAGES AWARDED [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, December 13. ■ A claim for £SOO damages, for alleged libel causing damage to their business, ivas brought before Mr Justice John* ston in the Supreme Court by Jollandr Ltd., manufacturers’ agents, 'of Wellington, against HV F. Stevens Ltd;, wholesale 1 druggists, of Christchurch, It was alleged by the plaintiffs that cer* tain portions of a, letter written by the defendants in April, 1934, to Macleans Ltd., England, were, defamatory and libellous. ; This letter included the following words:—“ We understand that your representative, Messrs Jolland* Ltd., are now practically in liquidation.” Reference was also made in the letter to overstocking. The defence denied the allegations of libel, and contended that the communication was bona fide on a matter that concerned onlv the defendant company and Macleans Ltd. The statement that the firm was nearly in liquidation had been withdrawn later by the defendants in s cablegram to Macleans. ' ■ Judgment was given fipr’ Jolland# Ltd., £2OO damages being awarded.
