Reference was made by the president (Mr James Hogg) at the annual meeting of the Dunedin.Manufacturers’ Aslast night to the approaching termination of office of the GovernorGeneral. Brother O’Sullivan, for six years on the staff of the Christian Brothers at Dunedin, left this morning, returning to Sydney. • Referring to the absence of the mayor (Mr Quelch) from the Mosgiel Fire Brigade social last night, several speakers expressed their delight that Mr Quelch had been appointed Mosgiel’s representative on the Metropolitan Board. His long experience on public, bodies would make him a very valuable member, especially in matters of finance, in which bo had for.-so’many years taken, a -prominent-part on . .the Otago Hospital Board. A worthy record of fifty years’ service in the" employ of the Phoenix Company was completed to-day by Mr Edward Whittaker. Now seventy-one years of age; Mr Whittaker, joined th® company as fireman, a position which he still holds. ; • '

It is not always the rule , that when a public body ceases to exist that prer sentations are. made : : to all its members, yet such' was . the case last night at a social at Mosgiel. The local - fir© brigade has merged into the Dunedin ,• Metropolitan Fire Board. The Mosgiel brigade, in recognition of the services the members and secretary had rendered, presented each with a token of esteem, and appreciation. The recipients w r ere Messrs S. B. Macdonald, J. C. Callander, 1 A. F. Quelch, A. F. Cheyne, J. F. Frew, and R. D. Rogers. The gifts were silver-mounted engraved, walking; sticks. The recipients,, who were I taken by surprise, returned thanks and wished the brigade every, success under the new order of things. The funeral of Mr T. Wentworth! Tayler this morning at the Northern Cemetery was "largely attended.- Ha was employed for forty years by John Mill and Co., most of the time as manager for that firm at Oamaru and Bluffs He was one of the original members of the Pirates Football Club, a member of the Southland Racing Club, and prominent as the owner of several good gallopers, Glensponse, Mettle Drift, and Soltoe gaining greatest honours for his colours. ,
