AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES.; The two following games (says the ‘ Draughts Review ’) wefe played in the recent American championship tourney (notes by N. Rubin, tho runner-up):— GAME 242. Black, N. Rubin; Whitd, W. Ryan. •. ; Bristol , Cross.”—j (Three-move opening, 11-16, 23-18, 7-11.)
Rubin resigned. (a) Cutting down the pieces, but it turned opt badly. (b) Little did wc suspect when making this move that it was a loser. At the moment it looked natural enough; 12-16, however, instead of the text, would draw easily, as, for instance, 12-18, 31-27, 16-20, 17-13, 15-18, 13-6, 1-10. Drawn. [The “choke”'Of the Black pieces in the double corner is tnost effective, as the dominating White king on 25 cannot be , dislodged without giving a man. Ryan pliyed a brilliant ending from note (b).—-Ed. * D.R.’l GAME 243. * —“ D6nriy;”— (Three-move opening; 10-14, 23-19, 14-18.) Black, N. Rubin; White, E. F. Hunt.
4nd 2-7. White won. (a) Premature; 4-8, 25-21, 11-15, etc., was drawn by Harison and Hunt at Nashville. (b) No draw after this; 13-17 instead will probably draw. (c) had anticipated the play from note (b) to this stage. At the time of making 4-8. however, we had planned, when this position was reached, to continue 12-16, 31-26, 18-22, 25-18, 10-15, but we could see now (hat White would win here by 26-23, 15-22, 14-8, 5-14, 23-19, 16-23, and the piece on 17 drnst go; 11-15 consequently was all that remained, but it gave little hope.
