IMPORTERS AND SHIPPERS

MEETING OF ASSOCIATION The monthly meeting of the executive of the Otago Importers and Shippers’ Association was held on Tuesday evening, Mr J. L. Gardiner presiding. Further information was received from Captain R. J. Hamilton (Bluff) relative to the suggestion of providing the opportunity for boys desirous of a seafaring career to obtain their training in sail. Captain Hamilton forwarded a complete plan and specification of a suitable vessel, as prepared by one of the best-known Clyde shipbuilders, with a wide experience of the building of such vessels in years gone by.—After full consideration it was decided that steps be taken to explore the possibilities of obtaining the necessary support for the building and running of such a vessel.

A letter was received from the British India Steam Navigation Company, London, regarding the arrangements that had been made for the direct steamer Rusreli (Arabia) with the new season’s dates for Australia and New Zealand, it advised that the steamer was due at the loading port about October 10, and provided prompt delivery of cargo was tendered, there should be no difficulty as to the arrival of the dates this coming season. The company further stated that it was urging shippers to expedite delivery of the fruit, so as to obviate any risk of delay in arrival on this side of the world. Tile report and balance-sheet of the New Zealand Importers’ Federation, Wellington, for the past year were submitted and approved, and it was resolved to ask Mr Stronach Paterson (Wellington), the representative of the association on the executive of the federation, to act as delegate at the forthcoming annual meeting, and at the same time to forward three proxies on behalf of other members of the association, so that the local body should be fully represented at the an mini meeting of the federation. Tlie Secretary reported that during the past month he had arranged lor the final and satisfactory adjustment of four claims, and rend two letters Irom members expressing much satisfaction at what had been done on their behalf. The Secretary added that he had no outstanding claims on hand at the moment.
