SPY DRAMA AND NAVAL COMEDY
OCTAGON'S FINE PROGRAMME Constance Bennett gives one of the best performances of her career in ‘ After To-night,’ the main attraction of " the Octagon's 'double-feature programme, commencing to-morrow. It is a picture dealing with perhaps the only phase of the war which has not heen exhausted to date—namely, the spy system. Constance Bennett takes the role of a frail little Russian spy who meets an Austrian counter espionage officer in the crowd of a Luxembourg railway station just before the outbreak of the war. As travel companions they become friends, but Carla, knowing the Austrian to be an enemy, slips away in the darkness. • Destiny brings them together on several occasions when the Austrian is sent out to find the mysterious leakage of information, which the girl is causing, as an agent in the disguise of a nurse and in various civilian capacities. ‘ Midshipman Jack ’ enfolds a tale of boyish adventure and sentiment. The scene is the United States Naval Academy, and the hero is one of those good-hearted, hut prankish, youths who are encountered so often in stories written for young readers. The film provides an authentic picture of the life of an American naval officer in training; there is not_over-much lovemaking ; and the relations between the hoys themselves is less emotional than is usual in American films of this type. The sunlit glimpses of the training grounds and of the young officers at sea in submarine chasers are full of life and movement. Bruce Cabot and tho other players who represent the cadets manage to look their parts, and all of them are refreshingly handsome. This modest, but successful, film is an R.K.O. production.
