WEALTHY DEBUTANTES
RIVALS TO MANNEQUINS PROTEST AGAINST AMATEURS. LONDON, November 1. Mayfair mannequins, says the ‘ Daily Mail,’ support their‘-New York colleagues in the protest against the competition of wealthy debutantes, which has led to a strike in a famous Fifth avenue store employing socially prominent amateurs. Lucie Clayton, a statuesque blonde and one of London’s most famous models, who runs a _ mannequins’ academy, says modelling is a hard job of hundreds of highly-trained mannequins, but only a lark to society girls. “ Americans are now exaggerating when they complain that amateurs are lowering the professional standard,” she adds. “ Rich girls look lovely at a cocktail party or a country club, but fail before a critical audience. They slouch about and giggle with their friends, and have no idea of how to put on their clothes. _ Nevertheless, they are invariably paid more highly than professionals.” Joanne Scfelle, England’s six-foot mannequin, says: “We do not mind if the amateurs ,are good, but the majority are hopeless. They trail about, making the show look ridiculous. They haven’t a flair for clothes.’,’
