THIRD ROUND OF THE OPEN [Per United Press. Association.] WANGANUI, October 8. The third round of the open golf championship began this morning in glorious weather. In the morning’s play Shaw showed good golf going out, reaching the turn m even fours, including a live at the ninth. He was three under fours at the thirteenth, but fives at the fourteenth and sixteenth, and a sixth at the,seventeenth marred his card, which showed 73. George Watt, the Masterton professional, went out in sensational fashion, being two under fours at the turn ; but he slipped a stroke at the fifteenth, again at the seventeenth, and two more at the eighteenth, to finish, in 73.
The best early card was returned by W. Kuril, who went out in 33 and came home in 38. E. Moss picked up one stroke on Shaw this morning, doing the round in 72. going out in 37 and returning in 35. Kuru struck bad luck in the third hole at the Dress Circle. He failed to get up the hill, which cost him seven.
Horton, the Masterton amateur, spoiled a chance to make a great round by taking eight at the ninth, going out in 42 and coming back in 36, a round, of 78. E. Guy did the round in 71, going out in 37, after being out of bounds at Land’s End. Coming home, h© had three putts at the tenth, holing in four. His score coming home included a birdie four at Long Tom and an eagle three at the Encampment, making 34 for the homeward journey.
J. P. Mortlaud, with a card of 70, recorded the best round of the morning. At the second he was to the left of the green in the bunker, registering five. At the ninth he had the misfortune to put his ball out of bounds. Coming home he wanted four at the last hole for a 69, but he got into the bunker with his second. He reached the green in three, but the ball stopped 2in from the hole. Results to baud (the first figure being the third round and the last the aggregate for three rounds) are: — A. Shaw, 73 —217.
