THE SEA WITCH
A RECORD-BREAKING CLIPPER SHIP The American three skysail yarder Sea Witch was launched in 1845, and was lost in 1856, but some of her sailin'l' records were never beaten. in 1849 she put up three records on quo voyage—New York to Valparaiso (10.568 miles) in sixty-nine days; Callao to China (10,417 miles) in fifty days; then from China to New York in seventy-five days. She had sailed round tho world in one hundred and ninetyfive sailing days. Her hull was painted black with a narrow gold stripe. The Sea Witch is claimed to have been tho first successful hollow-bowed clipper. For about twenty years, beginning u\ the forties, it is generally agreed that the most beautilul sailing ships of all time were produced. The Americans had to make fast ships in order to compete with the subsidies and monopolies of older maritime nations. Her dimensions were: Length, 192 ft over all; beam, 34ft; hold, 19ft; tonnage, 900. Like most of her fast rivals, the Sea Witch was not a dry ship in heavy weather.
