SERIOUS ASSAULT ON OLD WOMAN ALLEGED [Feu United Press .Association.! THAMES, August 29. _ Bakei (Jimmy) Ake, aged twenty-six years, was committed for, trial at Auckland by the magistrate (Mr F. W. Platts) on a charge of assault with intent to commit a serious offefice on a widow, aged seventy-seven, on- the evening of August 11. Hearing of the evidence occupied all yesterday afternoon. A doctor and the police gave evidence that accused was in a drunken stupor shortly after his arrest, and did not remember anything that happened. Counsel for the defence (Mr C. J. Garland) made application to reduce the charge to common assault, but the magistrate thought the court had no power to do so on such a serious charge. Accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed -to the Supreme Court at Auckland for trial, the Magistrate reserving his decision re bail for a fortnight, during which Ake will be held in custody at Thames.
