AMERICAN BUTTER IMPORTS

PAYMENT IN GOODS ‘ Hoard’s Dairyman,’ .a leading American publication on the dairy industry, under date July 25, states Imports of butter are already entering the United States, and some market commentators are of the opinion that we will see considerable increase in these imports. The following is a quotation from the ‘ Weekly News ’ letter of Mr W., F. Jensen, secretary of the American Association Creamery Butter Manufacturers: — “Twenty-seven casks—a little over 300,000 pounds—of Danish butter are now on the way to New York. The cost is reported to be 27 cents, duty paid, and it is understood that a large rubber company, which is selling automobile tyres in Denmark, is to absorb the loss. The loss on this shipment, reckoned upon Copenhagen quotations, will be from 5 to 0 cents a pound. “ The importation of butter may bo expected from Australia and New Zealand next fall and winter. The late Congress voted power to the President to adjust tariffs in order to facilitate our exports, and the talk is that if we export we must take payment in goods, and some exporters ai-e expecting to assume the loss on imported goods in order to export their own industrial products.”
