FORTRESS ENGINEERING EXPERT TO SUPERVISE WAR .OFFICE TO SUPPLY OFFICER [Peis United Press Association.] WELLINGTON. July 30. To implement the Government’s decision to modernise and extend the coast defences of tho dominion it has been decided to obtain on loan from the War Office the services of an officer of the Royal Engineers, _ with technical qualifications and experience in fortress engineering. The Minister of Defence (Mr Cobbe) stated this evening that the reports before him showed that no artillery or engineer officer now serving in New Zealand had had experience in such a position. The work to be undertaken in New Zealand involved the design of emplacements in addition to the sighting and installation of both range-find ing and electric light equipment, as well as guns; and in this work it was essential that the officer responsible should be fully conversant with modern practice. Mr Cobbe said that the officei selected by the War Office would n-j accompanied by a warrant officer who would act as his assistant in supervising the initial lay-out and construction of the works. Advice had been received that the War Office was prepared to provide the services of a qualified officer, but no information was yet available as to the name of the man selected
