In the Supreme Court, Wanganui, the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) sentenced Kennu Rerekura to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a cheque for £1 18s at Karioi from his mate, a relief worker. Bates tendered his written resignation to the Upper Hutt Borough Council. In his letter ho gave frank opinions on the manor in which the business at the council meetings was conducted. The council accepted his resignation, and referred it to the returning officer.
