Mr E. H. Rhodes, a director of the Fletcher Construction ’Company, left Dunedin this morning for his home in Auckland.

The death occurred at Christchurch' of Mr Horace Thompson after a brief illness. He was fox-merly a partner in the firm of Messrs Milner and Thompson, and for some time was ' Christchurch manager of Messrs Charles Begg and Co. Ltd. ’ ' The death has .occurred of Mr Joseph R. Whitaker, one of the best known educationists in Auckland. For over twenty years lie. was head master of the Mount Albert School. Mr John Maconie, of Roslyn, left this morning for Wellington, where he will take passage by ■ the Rotorua, which will sail on Saturday for London. Mr and Mrs Maconie will visit England and Scotland. For three years Mr Maconie has been a member of the Council of the Otago Acclimatisation Society, and chairman of the Research Committee, and members of l the council i met in the Tudor Lounge of the Savoy ■ yesterday afternoon to say good-bye to him. Mr J. H. Stewart, chairman ot the council, spoke of Mr Maconie’s wide knowledge of acclimatisation- affairs, especially mentioning fish culture, and presented him with a Mosgiel rug and a case of pipes as marks of apprecia- '■ tion of his work.. Mr,W. A. Raffils, ■ chairman of the Otago Anglers ' Association, presented Mr Maconie with a wallet, expressing to him the good wishes of the association for a happy time .in his .native land and its indebtedness to him for-work he had willingly, undertaken in the interests of the association. Mr Maconie thanked both bodies for their gifts, and assured them that any work he had done had provided him with not a small amount of pleasure. Mr A. de B. Brandon, who has been a director of the New Zealand Board of the A.M.P. Society for over fortyfive years, intends retiring from that position at the close of the present month. Mr Brandon was appointed to the board in 1888, became deputy-chair-man in 1903, and since 1918 has been chairman. Mr N. S. Falla has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the New Zealand directorate occasioned by Mr Brandon’s retirement.—Wellington Press Association. .
