There was great jubilation among members of the Miramar Ladies’ Golf Club to-day when news came through that Mrs Jacobsen had defeated Miss Molly Gourlay in the first round of the British Women’s Golf Championship,. Mrs Jacobsen’s performance in defeating such a redoubtable player as Miss Gourlay, who was the English ladies’' . champion in 1926 and in 1929, and the French open champion on three occasions, the Belgian open champion twice,and the" Swedish champion in 1932, ; was an outstanding one. As Miss Vir-' ian Upham Mrs Jacobsen learnt her golf as a member of the Miramar Club, and owes much of her success to the sound coaching of A. J. Shaw,the New Zealand professional champion, Sim started. off by winning tho Karori ladies’ championship as a girl of 16. Among her successes ‘ can he remembered the Rotorua open champion-* ship twice and the Napier open championship. She was runner-up at both) the-Miramar open-and the Wellington! provincial championships in 1917. Sh« has a very pretty style with a nice flat swing, wnich enables her to control her hall well .in the wind, x *;
