MANUFACTURES FROM MOTHER EARTH
Tho residents of Dunedin are fortunate in possessing an asset such as Calder’s quarry' right in the centre of the city. This quarry was opened in a small way in Watt’s road in 1868, and has been worked continuously since. There is in existence and can be seen at the quarry a permit to blast, issued by Jlr 3f‘Fadden, town clerk, North-east Valley, to the late Mr Geo. Calder in April, 1878. There is not a large building erected in Dunedin during the last fifty years in which screenings, etc., from Calder’s quarry does not enter into its construction. Amongst the number stands out; Foundation of the Post Office, New Zealand Express Company, National Bank, Town Hall, Regent Theatre, Public Trust, Dental School, ‘ Evening Star,’ etc. _ Ho show the deposit of stone practically in the centre of the city wo will give a few figures:—One foot of stone over one acre will produce I,6lßyds screenings ; multiplied by height of face, 150 ft, gives 241,950 yards; multiplied by twenty-six acres, amount of stone available, 5,830,000yds screenings. Taking the total output of all the quarries in Dunedin at 100,000 yards in one year, Calder’s quarry is capable of keeping the whole city going for fifty -eight years.
