MESSRS A. AND T. BURT
When one visualises the extent of tiia premises in which the operations of Messrs A. and T. Burt are carried'on to-day, one finds it difficult to realise that the foundations of the business were laid in a tiny workshop measuring 20ft by Isft in the Octagon in 1862. Owing to the capacity of their - works, Messrs A. and T. Burt in 1874 removed to the premises in which they are at present. As the city and the province have expanded, so have Messrs A. and T. Burt extended their activities, which now cover the business of general and electrical engineers, sanitary plumbers; brassfounders, coppersmiths, etc. The firm has established a’ worthy reputation throughout the dominion, and even further afield, and its name has 'been associated with almost innumerable works of considerable magnitude in different places in both the North and South Islands. In all departments in the different branches the firm provides employment for something like 1,000 hands, to whom a very large sum is paid in wages annually. Respecting the tenders of Messrs Hnme Steel Ltd., accepted by the Dunedin City Council for the thirty-six miles of steel pipes and fittings in connection with the Deep Creek water scheme, Messrs Hume Steel Ltd. provide for the manufacture of pipes in Dunedin (with the exception of the thicker pipe—12J per cent, of the total length—which they reserve the right to manufacture in, Wellington). They further advise that they have entered into an agreement with Messrs A. and T. Burt Ltd., that in the event of the acceptance of , their tenders they will', place an order with Messrs A. and T.Burt Ltd. for bends, tapers, branch pieces for tee pipes, bellmquths, all valves, high-pressure flexible, joints for pipes, all of which will also be manufactured in Dunedin. Messrs Hume Steel Ltd. guarantee to deliver pipes at 3,000 ft per week from four months after acceptance, fittings to be delivered to suit this rate of supply. This rate of delivery corresponds to completing delivery of 191,000 ft by about •November 30, 3935—approximating 300 tons of castings. , .
