BROADCASTING MATTERS

REPRESENTATIONS BY ADVISORY COUNCIL DECISIONS OF THE BOARD Following persistent representations by some of the members of the Advisory Council to the New' Zealand Broadcasting Board to make known to the public some of the more important decisions reached after the periodical meetings ■of the council, the local representative (Mr H. Booth) has received certain information from the general manager of tho board (Mr E. C. Hands). This is now released for publication. For some time Otago Central and Nelson have been to obtain a subsidy for their B stations on account of the poorness of reception in their respective areas, and it is now advised that two members of the board’s engineering staff have left for Nelson to carry out tests in that area. The work is expected to occupy about a fortnight. The board has decided to follow the advice of the council in regard to making tests in Central Otago. Although it is not possible to indicate at present when tho tests will commence in that area, no time will bo lost in getting to work. Definite instructions have been issued to the stations that racing results are not to bo broadcast during the children’s sessions. _ When necessary tho children’s sessions will conclude five minutes earlier, and the results be broadcast between 5.55 and 6 p.m. The board has noted the recommendation of the council in regard to the broadcasting of comic operas, and wishes it made clear that it is already the hoard’s policy to secure the broadcasting of such performances whenever possible. Another matter dealt with by the council at its last meeting was in connection with the broadcasting of controversial matter. The PostmasterGeneral has been communicated with regarding the regulation governing controversial speech over the air, and it is hoped that something will bo done as a result of the representations.
