The death has occurred in Christchurch Hospital of Arthur William Mitchell, aged 78, the oldest resident of Chatham Islands, where ho settled in 1877. He was born at Bedford, England. 'He was a member of the Chatharas Jockey Club and other bodies for a long period. . FAMOUS CYCLIST AND AIR PIONEER CHRISTCHURCH, May 2. Private advice has heen received of the death in Melbourne of Mr Herbert John Pither, aged 66. He. was a prominent cyclist in early days, being tho Australian-New Zealand champion .in 1894 and 1895, defeating A. A. Zimmerman in a match race ill. Sydney.He also built and flew at Riverton one of the few aeroplanes to be flown in the dominion, and later made pioneer flights with it in Australia. He was noted as - a wonderful mechanic, and even built a motor car and, marine engines. " \ 1
