ATTACK ON WOMAN
ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE PROVED [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, April 30. After a retirement of 45 minutes the jury in the Supremo Court to-day returned a verdict ot guilty 'against John Conway Murphy, a labourer, aged fortytwo, on a charge of attempting to murder All’s Daisy HeimdaJ on the night of April 2 on the Town Belt. The evidence adduced was that Murphy attacked Airs Heimdal with a spanner and knife, inflicting severe injuries to her neck ancl breast, and afterwards surrendered himself to the police, stating that ho had murdered a woman. Afr Justice Reed was on the Bench. Air P. S. K. Alacassey conducted the case for the prosecution and Air A. B. Croker appeared for the accused. Two alternative charges of assault with intent to do grevious bodily harm and assault causing actual bodily harm were also preferred, but the accused was found guilty on the major count, that ot attempted murder. He was remanded for sentence.
