DUNEDIN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

TO-MORROW NIGHT'S PROGRAMME A programme of great diversity and substantiality will be given by the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra at its concert in the Town Hall Concert Chamber tomorrow night. The orchestral items in their listed order are:—Overture, ‘ Coriblanus ’ (Beethoven), ‘ Invitation to the Waltz ’ (Weber), Symphony No. 4 in F minor (Tschaikowsky), Wotan’s 1 Farewell ’ and ‘ Fire Charm ’ from ‘Die Walkure ’ (Wagner), ‘Forest Murmurs ’ and ‘ Siegfried Forging the Sword Nothung ’ (Wagner), and excerpts from 1 Madame Butterfly ’ (Puccini). There is variety here to satisfy the most exigent and technical difficulties enough to test the prowess of the orchestra that has won such loyal adherents in the two seasons of - its existence. The Tschaikowsky symphony is the tour de force of the occasion. It is a signal example of the composer’s felicity in orchestration. Based in general on the simplest of Russian folk tunes, it is elaborated and elevated by his genius into a composition of noble proportion and epic grandeur. The high lights of the second part are the Wagner pieces, both of the sensational order, and replete with that ornate richness that characterises all his operatic work. The collaborating vocal soloist is Signora Aida Bulmas, a dramatic soprano of well-attested worth, who will sing, in character and with full orchestral accompaniment, Santuzza’s ‘ Roman/, a ’ from Mascagni’s ‘ Cavalleria Rusticana ’ and the aria ‘ Ritorna » incitor ’ from ‘ Aida.’ The instrumental soloist is the ’cellist Miss Elvira Wycherley, who will play Bruchs Kol Nidrci.’ ' . , i A substantial accretion to the usual large audience is expected, since, toi the'' first time in the orchesta s history, arrangements do not permit a broadcast.
