A huge cheering crowd assembled at the palace to greet King Leopold and Queen Astrid when they were returning from the traditional Te Deum service marking the second day_ of the_ monarch’s reign. Their Majesties, in response to continuous appeals, mounted the balcony amid wild plaudits. The entire court had attended the service at St. Gudule Cathedral, which had been specially redecorated and was occupied by representatives of the Government and the Embassies. Cardinal Van Roey. of Malines, who was attended by all the bishops of Belgium and all the priests in Brussels, delivered an address of loyalty, which King Leopold acknowledged, declaring his determination to exert the utmost effort to fulfil his coming task with the assistance of Queen Astrid. The choir chanted ‘ Alma Mater,’ and the congregation, to the roll of drums, rose and sang ’ Brabanconne.’ The majestic splendour of the scene deeply ;r*/ected tne King and Queen. King Leopold sent a message to the citizens thanking them for their loyaltv as a pledge for the future. He decreed a remission of many military and civil punishments, and extended a special pardon to all offenders who served in the army in war time.
