EARTHQUAKE SAFEGUARDS

PROTEST AGAINST REVOKING REGULATIONS [Per United Press Association.] HASTINGS, February 9. Disapproval of the Government’s intended revocation of the building regulations issued by proclamation in respect of Hastings, Napier, and Wairoa, and imposed after the earthquake of 1931, was expressed last evening by the Mayor of Hastings, Mr G. A. Maddisou, at a meeting of the Borough Council. Mr Maddisou said that in his opinion the Government should not only keep tho regulations in force in the boroughs mentioned, but should apply them to the whole of New Zealand. It was reasonable to fear that the country might some day suffer just as great au earthquake as Hawke’s Bay had experienced, and the lessons of 1931 should not bo forgotten. For the protection of the people, the regulations should be made compulsory throughout the whole of New Zealand. The council unanimously passed a resolution to inform the Department of Internal Affairs that tho withdrawal of the proclamation would make no difference to Hastings, as the borough bylaws provided for all the necessary requirements, but that the council was firmly of opinion that the regulations, ns they exist at present, should apply to the whole of New Zealand.
