[Conducted by A.W.] Games analysis, solutions to problems invited for this column. Games should be written in six columns, as below, and all correspondence addressed to the Draughts Editor, the ‘ Evening Star.’ TO CORRESPONDENTS. L. Burn (Milton). —Solution to problem 156 is correct. Your play in No. 155 allows a Black win. At third move in note (a) you play 17-21 and White draws. Now play 5-9 instead, and Black gets the cut. and wins. The idea is quite different. Many thanks for letter, greatly appreciated. G. F. M'Cluskoy (N.E.V.).— Solution to problems 155 and 156 are correct. Overlooked last week. Note what you say about (he chib opening. Thanks for problem. Will examine with view to using. PROBLEM 159. GAME 148. —“ Bristol ” (11-16, 22-17).
(a) Play to (his stage by T)e Ream versus Cornell in the seventh American tourney. Cornell played 18-15 here, and after a few more moves both players willingly called a draw. I continue as above to win for White what would probably be the longest, game, on record. (b) Moving the pivot man, and the Black stand is over. (c) 18-22 is no better. (d) The While game is interesting from note (a).—From the Hamilton ‘ Advertiser.’ GAME 149. —“ Bristol ” (11-16, 22-18). [By G Carswell, Bellshill.]
Notes by Mr G. Carswell. (a) If 9-13 is played here, Black loses 'by 15-11, etc., see the ‘ Kucvcloptedia.’ (h) If I had played 13-17 hero 1 would have won. (e) 10-15 3-7, 19-24, 7-10, 24-31, 10-19, 18-23 Black wins (d) I have set down the game as it was played, and give the above notes to show how 1 should have won. The game was commented on in the ‘ Glasgow Citizen ’ of 12111/32 as being (he outstanding feature of the match, and later appeared in the ‘ Govan Press.’ It was played between R. Waddell and me in the St. Rollox and Cowlairs match in November, 1952.
GAME 150. —“ Bristol ” (11-16, 24-20). Bryant Correspondence Tourney Game. Black, A. Fletcher (Portsmouth; White F. Tompkins (Walthamstow).
(a) The ‘ Bristol ” —a fairly level opening. (b) 27-24 is a good line. (c) This gels away from all book play, 22-17, 32-27, 22-18, and 26-23, have all figured in published play. (d) books best at this point. (e) A well-balanced, original game. NOTES. The December number of the ‘ Draughts Review ’ contains the pleasing assurance that this magazine will carry on for another year, but at. the end of that time, unless there is a balanced budget, there will be no justification for carrying on. The Caledonian Club will hold its annual meeting on Thursday. March 1.
