This is the third payment of the kind by the Savings Bank trustees. The late Mr Holloway, of pills fame, told a writer in the ‘ Australasian ’ that he retrenched his advertising considerably one year, and the result was a falling off of £20,000 in his sales. He never repeated the experiment. Judicious advertising is the keystone of success. * * * * The first cricket match ever played between Tasmania and Otago was contested on the Carisbrook Ground. Scores Tasmania: First innings, 40; second innings, 47. Otago: First ininngs, 65 (Harris 41) ; second innings, 24 for two wickets. Otago thus won by eight wickets. Cooke, H. Mac Neil, and C. Coombs; committee — Messrs Angus, Cook, Hogg, Chapman, and Robertson. * • * • Egyptian troops numbering 3,600, under Baker Pasha, were heavily defeated by Arabs near Suakin. Gordon Pasha’s safety is doubtful, and the fall of Khartum is likely to follow. This further Egyptian disaster is likely seriously to damage Mr Gladstone’s credit at the coming General Election.
