MOSGIEL WATER SUPPLY

DISCUSSION AT COUNCIL MEETING The recent spell of hot weather made some Mosgiel folks wonder if the water supply would continue to provide nil their needs, but it was evident from the business before last night’s meeting that it is thoroughly satisfactory. Part of the pipe line has been cleaned, and this, too, apparently has helped to improve matters. The report of the Works Committee stated that the work of lifting, scraping, and relaying the pipes from the Wnaro Flat intake as tar as the junction with the main from Leishman’s intake has been completed and a test taken of the flow of water at the junction with Leishman’s line recorded a How of 150 gallons per minute against fifty gallons per minute which was obtained at this point before the pities were''cleaned. A test taken at the toot of the Reservoir Hill recorded seventy-five gallons How per minute and a farther test at the reservoir recorded fifty gallons per minute, or approximately the same How as was obtained before the scraping work was commenced. From these tests it is apparent that the work carried out above Leishman’s has considerably improved the flow up to this point, but it is’ evident that the pipes between Lcishinan’s and the reservoir must be in a badly corroded condition. The matter of lifting and scraping the pipes for the full length of the pipe line is engaging tjie further consideration of the committee. Speaking to the motion for the adoption' of the report. Cr Frew mentioned that the water supply had been adequate during the recent hot weather. No restrictions had been found necessary, and 140,000 gallons a day had been drawn off. This showed that the' service was a good one. He doubted if ratepayers were fully aware of the asset they bad in their water supply. It was worthy of note that 50 per cent, of that water had been supplied by the pumping plant at a cost of Id per 1.000 gallons. At times he thought ratepayers had spoken in a spirit of criticism of that plant, but he could only compliment those responsible for the installation. Me trusted ratepayers had noted its worth in the very, hot weather. The Mayor referred to the improvement in thp supply since the pipes above Leishman’s had been cleaned. As the clearing proceeded a greater degree of purity would be obtained. Jr must also be remembered that there were 140 consumers outside the borough boundary. With all the work now in hand the present good supply would be further augmented. He also referred to the work going on at the septic tanks, and said this would result in the effluent being purified a good deal better before it reached the stream. The borough bad great assets in its water apply and septic tanks.
