DOMINION’S SILVER COINAGE

February 7. .By the end of next .month all denominations of New Zealand’s own silver coinage will be in circulation in the dominion, A shipment of florins Irom the Koval Mint will reach New Zealand next week, while consignments ot shillings and threepences, also on the water, are due to arrive some time later. Arrangements have also been made for the minting of live-shilling pieces, but these will not lie put into general circulation. The signing of the Treaty of Waitangi will be depicted on the five-shilling pieces. Provision for the minting ot crowns was made in the Coinage Act passed during last session of Parliament. These coins will not go into circulation, but arc to be struck for the benefit of numismatists and coin collectors generally. They will also bo available for sets of coins. The half-croM'ns were the first of the new series to reach the dominion, and these, to the value of £25(1,000, arrived about the end of November last and went immediately into circulation. The first of the sixpences came to hand about ten days ago. The new two-shilling piece will bear a representation of a kiwi. The shilling will depict a Maori warrior brandishing a tnialia, and the threepenny piece two carved meres crossed. It is oflici ally estimated that about 41.000,00* 1 new silver coins will be required to replace those now in circulation in the dominion.
