MONTHLY MEETING The monthly mectitng of the Mosgiel Borough Connell, held last night, was presided over by Mr A. E. Quelch (mayor). CORRESPONDENCE. Mr Lambournc (Dunedin) forwarded a plan of the subdivision of sections in Bush road.—Approved and signed. The Otago Hospital Board forwarded statement of accounts lov the year ended March 31, 1034.—Received. The Municipal Association of New Zealand forwarded correspondence in connection with the annual conference to be held in Wellington on March 14. —The mayor, Cr Frew, and the clerk were empowered to deal with tho remits on tho order paper and give any instructions to tho council’s delegate (Air A. E. Ansell, AI.P.). WORKS. Tho Works Committee reported as follows; Septic Tanks.- —The receiving tanks have been desludged .and cleaned out during fresh in stream. Two large storage ponds have been provided to allow more settling and aeration, these ponds discharge over spillways and filter beds, but the effluent has been kept out of the stream as much as possible during the warm weather. Water Supply.—All air and scour valves on the pipe line have received close attention and dead ends of mams have been run off. Drainage.—-A blockage in stormwater drain across Gordon road was attended to and a storm-water drain was laid across the footpath for a resident in Gladstone road. Maintenance.—The cutting of grass on roadsides has been completed. Six hundred yards of gravel has been carted from the Silvcrstroam to dumps as per contract. Spraying experiments with emulsion and oil with a now to minimising the dust nuisance were carried out in Factory road. Ihe committee has under consideration the permanent surfacing of Factory and Gladstone roads, and a report on this matter is being obtained from an engineer. The lower end of Argyle street has been cleared of rubbish and grass cut. Ims street is now open for foot traffic for its full length. Two traffic discs have been placed at the intersection of Gordon, Bush, and Factory roads with a \' to minimising the risk ol accident at this spot. Gravel has been spread on Green street and tho grader has been employed on (Jordon, Gladstone, and Factory roads. Tarring and patching the footpaths is being carried out as weather permits. Men under No. o scheme, have "it employed excavating storage ponds at septic tanks, loading gravel, and cleaning water tables and paths. Bruce Street Sevi er.— Ihe committee has authorised the laying ol a sewer to provide drainage facilities for houses in Bruce street, the property owners concerned to pay one-third of the cost of installation of tho main and also the ordinary sewer connection ices. Wastage of Water.—An inspection ol all water services within the borough has been carried out since last meeting, a number of defective services being discovered. These have now been repaired FINANCE. ■ The Finance Committee reported that tIT committee has considered the town clerk’s: report dealing with receipts and rfexpenditufe for the period April 1, 1933, to January 27, 1934, which disclosed that the various accounts were in a satisfactory position.- A sub-comnnt-tcc consisting of the mayor, Crs J. F. Frew, and R. Smeaton has been appointed to assist in the preparation of an urban farm land list for the borough. The penalty on unpaid rates after February 28 was discussed, and a resolution was passed enforcing the penalty. The report was adopted; and accounts amounting to £1,115 12s 5d were passed for payment. GENERAL AND RESERVES. The General Committee reported:— The committee has granted the use of the Coronation Hull to the Taicri Horticultural Society for their autumn show on March 2 and 3. The Reserves Committee reported:— The committee noted that the Taieri Cricket Club has been using for a wicket a strip of ground at the northern end of the Recreation Ground without having obtained permission to do so, except on one occasion only. The committee has directed that a letter be sent to the chib asking lor an explanation of its action in this matter.
