The Hon. L., Cotter, of the NewSouth Wales Legislature, concluded Ins tour of Otago to-day, leaving Dunedin by train, bound for Wellington, from whence be starts to travel through the North Island. Mr J. H. Duncan travelled from Dunedin to Christchurch by to-day’s express. Miss Olga Fitchett has spent her holidays with her parents, and left Dunedin this morning to resume duty on the staff of Woodford House at Havelock. Mr C. P. Ryan, general secretary to the railway super-annuitants, arrived in Dunedin this morning. Mr G. L. Johnston was a passenger for Wellington by this morning’s train. Professor Benham left Dunedin by the south express this morning. Dr Marjorie Barclay left by the north express this morning on a holiday visit to Sydney. Mr E. D. Duthie left for Invercargill this morning on a short business trip.Mr P. Barling, bound for Christchurch on a brief visit, was a passenger by the first express this morning. Mr L. D. Woolf left by plane this morning for Wellington. From Carterton comes the notification of the death of Mrs Hornsby,widow of Mr J. T. M. Hornsby, who years ago was in country newspaper work in Otago, and subsequently became M.P. for Wairarapa. Mr H. M. Mackay will -return by service car from Wanaka this evening. Dr E. H. Clarke, who has been on the staff of the Wellington Hospital,; returned to Dunedin yesterday to take up a position as assistant in the Physiology Department of the University of ot Mi°H. Tonkinson, C.1.E., C.8.E., of Burma, accompanied by his wife, arrived lay the Monowai on a holiday visit to the dominion. Other passengers included: —Dr B. F. Brown, a well-known Melbourne dental surgeon, on a tour of the South Island; Mr T. Dangerfield, of the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, Sydney, accompanied by his wife; Mr I. Moltke, Vice-Consul for Denmark in Sydney, on a holiday visit to the dominion; Dr R. M. Campbell, private secretary to the Minister of Finance. Mr Campbell has been attending the economio conference in Australia. Colonel Sir Charles Merrett, president of the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria and chairman of the Commonwealth Rifle Associations, who was captain of the Australian team at Bisley in 1914 and 1928, arrived at Wellington yesterday to investigate farming problems, and while here he intends to see whether a team of New, Zealand riflemen would bo prepared to visit Victoria towards the end of the year. He will _ also discuss the changes that are taking place .through' the introduction of modern ammunition and new rifles. Under the Imperial .Teachers Exchange Scheme, Miss M. A. Drury, of South Yorkshire, arrived at Wellington by the Monowai to undertake twelve months’ teaching in New Zealand. For the first three months Miss Drury will replace Miss Barbara Clark, who left Wellington about the middle of December on exchange to a school in England. After three months’ service at Wellington Miss Drury will be sent to other schools in the dominion to enable her to gain a wide experience of schools and teaching in this country,Under the same scheme, a London, teacher arrived at Auckland recently. Seven Roman Catholic priests arrived at Wellington yesterday from Sydney.Two of them —the Rev. Father P. Zundolovich, of Willcania, N.S.W., and Father W. Byrne, C.S.S.H.—are visiting Wellington in with Archbishop Redwood’s jubilee. Fathers G. B. O’Meeghan and J. Maguire, of the Catholic Cathedral at Christchurch, returned after a visit to Sydney. Father M. Hanigan, C.S.S.R., of Perth, is entering St. Gerard’s Monastery at Wellington, and Fathers E. Gallagher and B. Courtenay are going to Holy Cross College, Mosgiel. The attitude of the Rev. E. J.Howie, of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Wellington, towards a call from the Malvern Church, Melbourne, was explained at a meeting of the congregation. Mr Howie said the call was a unanimous one, and Melbourne represented a great sphere of service.: Personally, he did not want to go, but he felt that he ought to do so,The congregation passed a resolution regretfully concurring with Mr Howie’s decision if he felt it his duty to accept. The Bishop of • Nelson, Dr Sadlier, New Zealand president of the Church Missionary Society, who has retired and is leaving for England shortly, was farewelled by a large and most enthusiastic gathering at Marsden Church house last evening. Tributes were paid to his work in connection with the establishment of the Board of Missions and generally. Speakers said that Mr Sadlier had left the most impressive work in missionary endeavour in New Zealand. During the farewell, Archdeacon Dart mentioned that in large measure, the work of the Church Missionary Society was responsible for the signing of the Waitangi Treaty.—Nelson Association message. .
